When it comes to standing out in an ever crowded and fast moving market space there are a number of different methods to take but one which should be considered is offering an IT security solution.

However, it’s not as straightforward as popping in an anti-virus software option – which unfortunately many people in the business world think of when they consider IT security. In addition, if they’ve never been the victim of a virus attack or a security breach, SME owners can sometimes assume the risks are being over-emphasised and don’t take the issue seriously.

There are a number of different ways to go about this. One of them is to look at taking a layered approach and consider moving your business to an MSSP (Managed Security Service Provider) by taking on the security risk of an SME through outsourcing, harnessing the capabilities of Cloud-based protection.

Cover all the IT security legal responsibilities

However, as our recent blog – Would you be accountable in a cybersecurity or data protection breach? – demonstrated MSPs moving into security offerings need to ensure they are covering all the legal responsibilities. If not, they could be held liable if a breach occurs. Only recommend the use or supply of Cloud solutions that are ISO27001 compliant and/or get your own business accredited and reduce your risk and enhance your credibility.

Add additional layers to the anti-virus protection by suggesting your clients follow these basic security steps as well:

  • Email security – use a Cloud-based process which includes automated “scrubbing” for spam and potentially dangerous emails before it reaches the inbox
  • Web security – keep an actively updated list of web domains and IP addresses associated with malicious activity and impose IP blocks on corporate browsers to restrict access
  • Web content filtering – One of the easiest methods of preventing security breaches is to restrict your company’s payroll computer from accessing potentially dangerous sites
  • Backup – Offer a backup and restore Cloud-based solution which gives clients confidence that their data is not only protected but that it is stored in the event of a security breach. This provides them with peace of mind which is priceless.

As an MSP you are in a unique position of being able to offer bundled security services which help cut down on risk points in a corporate environment where hundreds of thousands of records are being potentially compromised.
